Jonny Nguyen made a big first impression on the 2015 MIAC football season. The Mounds View, Minn. native had eight tackles (including 1.5 for loss) and a forced fumble in just 27 snaps as the Pipers opened with a solid defensive effort in a 40-7 win over UM-Morris last Saturday at Klas Field.

The Irondale grad was a force on his side of the ball all day. If he wasn't making life miserable for UMM QB Donnie Mavencamp, he was downfield disrupting his receivers. It was in the latter role that he forced a fumble on the last play of the first half that amputated a potential scoring drive. 

Indeed, the Piper defense was strong, holing UMM to just 168 yards total offense -- easily the best defensive effort in the frirst week of play. Nguyen and his mates will be looking to do so this Saturday when they trek down Snelling Ave. to defend The Paint Bucket at Macalester. Kickoff for the non-conference game is at 7:00 p.m.
