The MIAC Indoor Track/Field Championships are still a few weeks off. But Hamline senior Gabby Koel is rounding into form as one of the top throwers in the Midwest and a definite contender when the league's teams get together at St. Thomas next month.

The Alexandria, Minn. native was in excellent form last Saturday at the Falcon Winter Classic in River Falls, Wis. She won the Shot Put competition with a throw of 40'11. That's the second best throw this season by any MIAC athlete. Gabby also took third in the Weight Throw with a 44-3 1/2 effort. (That ranks seventh so far this spring in the conference.) 

Koel won the Discus competition at the MIAC Outdoor TF meet last spring and qualified for the NCAA D-III meet. She currently one of just three Pipers who rank in the Top 50 nationally in their respective event. She still has a lot of time to improve on her 41st place ranking. Next up for Koel and the Pipers: The Macalester Invite on Friday, February 3.
