Box Score
It was only a tie. But it showed that the Hamline men's hockey team has a lot of fight left in them.
For the second night in a row, Kevin Novakovich had a goal and an assist in a game. This time, it lifted the Pipers (0-3-1) into a hardfought, come-from-behind 2-2 OT tie at UW-River Falls Saturday night.
Nick Heimer kicked away 31 shots -- including three in OT -- for HU.
For the first time this year, the Pipers struck first. Joe Moore finished off a three way play with Novakovich and Joe Rubbelke 10:39 into the game to give HU a lead that lasted into the second period. The Falcons, who defeated Concordia, 3-2, on Friday, came back with a pair of goals in the middle session to take a 2-1 lead into the final period.
The Pipers, however, took advantage of a late penalty to tie the game. Novakovich finished off the play with help from Rubbelke and Andrew Herbert at 16:23 to deadlock the game.
That ended the scoring but not the action. Each team had three shots on goal in the extra five minute session before settling for the draw.
Hamline now readies itself for its first game in its new home ice surface-- Oscar Johnson Arena. UW-Eau Claire, the defending NCAA Division III champ, visits on Friday, November 15 for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. UW-Superior will be at OJ Saturday, November 16, also at 7:05 p.m.
