Box Score 2 It was exactly rthe type of game that Hamline softball coach
Jim Rubbelke was looking for from pitcher
Lauren Clouston. With the MIAC Tournament looming this weekend, the junmior from Lisle, Ill. was on her game, tossing a complete game three-hitter as the Pipers defeated UW-Stout, 5-1, in their regular season finale at Meredith Field. Earlier in the day, the Pipers had been blanked by the Blue Devils, 6-0.
The win means the Pipers finish the regular season over .500 at 17-15, a big improvement over the previous season's final mark of 10-28. Clouston, who helped herself at the plate with a RBI, improved to 6-7 overall as the kept the Blue Devils scoreless unbtil the last inning. Until UWS scored in that final frame, only one runner had even reached third base.
Meanwhile,
Elaina Hammann took advantage of just her fourth start of the seaosn to bang out a pair of hits, steal a base, scored a run and knock one in.
It was a scoreless game in the third when Hammann singled, stole second and rode home on an error by UWS left fielder Courtney Smith. Two inings later,
Bethany Hine doubled to deep left center and Hammann plated her with a single. Clouston added some insurance with a RBi single in the sixth and
Chelsea Simon chipped in with a two RBI single of her own.
The win erased the memory of the first game that saw the Blue Devils jump to a 3-0 lead before the Pipers ever got to the plate. HU managed just four singles and never advanced past second base.
Bri Vela (11-6) took the loss.
With the rehular season completed, the Pipers now wait to see who they will be matched up with Friday at the MIAC Tournament in North Mankato. Hamline's 12-8 MIAC mark currently ranks third in the league. However, since there has been an unequal number of games played by all th eteams, there is a formula that takes in many factors that will decide the pairings. The Pipers hope to find out Wednesday who ... and when ... they will play on Friday.
