Men's Hockey Makes It Two In a Row

11/7/2014 9:54:00 PM

Box Score It got a little hectic at the end but it was well worth it for the Hamline men's hockey team.

The Pipers sprinted to an early two goal lead and went on to make it two wins in a row with a 4-2 win over UW-Stout Friday at Oscar Johnson Arena. Kevin Novakovich, Tyler Gonzales, Mitch Hall and Brandon Zurn netted the goals and John Sellie-Hanson knocked away 23 shots in goal as HU improved to 2-1 under first year head coach Cory Laylin.

Playing their first home game of the season, the Pipers jumped out on their home ice fast, scoring twice in the first 14:35 of play. Novakovich got things going just 69 seconds into the game finishing off a three way play with Jaycob McCombs and Hall. Gonzales got loose in front of the Blue Devil net to up the margin.

Hall (21) converted Gonzales' pass for his first collegiate goal at 1:07 of the second frame, driving Blue Devil goalie Chase Hollander to the bench in favor of Spencer Viele. The Blue Devils used the power play to get back into the game. They scored in the final minute of the second period and a second one 4:26 into the third.

Sellie-Hanson and his mates then tightened matters, keeping the Blue Devils off the board the rest of the way. Viele was pulled for a sixth attacker with 57 seconds remaining in the game. It took the Pipers just 10 seconds to take advantage as Zurn rifled in his first goal of the year into the empty net, thus assuring the Pipers of their first winning streak since late in the 2011-12 season.

It also avenged a 10-3 loss at the hands of UW-Stout last season.

HU gets back at it Saturday, hosting UW-River Falls at Oscar Johnson. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
