4/13/2014 6:30:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 40 degrees and windy doesn't seem like the type of day where hitters should flourish. Somebody forgot to tell the Hamline softball team. The  Pipers racked up 18 runs and slapped out 21 hits in a split of two free-swinging games at UW-River Falls Sunday.

Hamline won the opener, 9-7 but lost the nightcap, 10-9.

In the first game, Casey Amderson's three-run homer  and Kelsey McWiliams' two-RBI double in the fifth inning helped Hamline overcome an early deficit and take a 7-4 lead. The Falcons came right back for three to even the game at 7. The tie, however, didn't last long. Katie Koren unloaded a two-RBI homer in the sixth inning and that was enough for relief pitcher Morgan Rykken, who quieted the Falcons the rest of the way to get the win.

In the second game, Jamie Rubbelke was a solid leadoff hitter, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mary-Clare Couillard followed Rubbelke and meted out five singles in five at-bats. The freshman second baseman is now third in the MIAC in hitting with a .453 standard and is fourth inHits with 34.)  Chelsea Koehn drove in a pair of runs as well but HU couldn't keep the Falcons off the board. A five-run fifth inning gave WRF a 10-9 edge. Hamline pout two runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't move them home.

The Pipers are now 11-12-1 overall. They have a busy week ahead with MIAC twinbills against St. Benedict in St. Joseph Tuesday before returning home to face St. Mary's Thursday and St. Olaf Friday. Hamline is fourth in conference play with a 5-3 record.
