Box Score 2 Hamline's volleyball team didn't have a lot of time to dwell on their first loss of the season.Â
In fact, they put it in their rear view mirror in very short order.Â
The Pipers lost a tough five set match to UW-Stout, 3-2 and then turned around a half-hour later and swept Grinnell, 3-0, on the opening day of the St. Catherine Invitational at Butler Gym.
HU now stands 9-1 on the season.
The Pipers put up some stout defensive numbers in sweeping Grinnell. They held the Pioneers to a .037 hitting percentage in recording the 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 wins.Â
Jena Meyer (pictured) led a balanced offense with eight kills.Â
Stepahnie Kaup andÂ
Michelle Mattke had seven apiece.
Amelia Jensen chipped in with 17 assists andÂ
Lynsey Reimer led the way on the back wall with 19 digs. Jensen andÂ
Jamie Rubbelke led a seven service ace attack with two each.Â
The UWS match was a grinding affair. HU survived a back and forth opening set for a 26-24 win. They started strong and never let up in winning the second set, 25-15. In the third set, however, UWS took an early lead and never relinquished it for a 22-25 decision. The Blue Devils started strong in the fourth set as well, taking an early 10-6 lead. But the Pipers came back and actually had a match point at 24-24. The Blue Devils, however, rallied for three straight markers and a 24-26 decision to force a tiebreaking set. UWS pulled away from a 7-all tie for a 9-15 decision to knock the Pipers out of the ranks of the undefeated.Â
Meyer topped the HU hitters with 17 kills. Jensen had a double- double (29 assists, 10 digs) and Reimer had 26 digs. The senior continues to lead the MIAC with an average of 6.35 digs per set.Â
