Box Score It was a game where few opportunities were available. When
Malya Hirshkowitz (pictured) got one, she made the most of it. As a result, the Hamline women's soccer team has a two-game winning streak to start the 2014 season.
The sophomore nailed a perfect direct kick with 16:12 remaining in the second half to lift the Pipers to their second consecutive 1-0 win over a Badger state rival at Paterson Field Wednesday. This time, it was UW-River Falls that was the victim.
Amy Ramras had three saves in goal as the Pipers moved to 2-0-0 for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Rarely, however, has been the trip more difficult than this one.
Unlike their season-opening win against UW-Eau Claire, the Pipers struggled in the first 30 minutes of play. The Falcons gunned three shots on goal at Ramras to no avail. Hamline began to carry the play in the later stages of the half and the shots were even at three at the intermission.
In the second half, the Pipers muffled the Falcons so well that the visitors didn't get a shot of any sort off. HU continued to press the attack, forcing WRF into fouls to stop play. Hirshkowitz took advantage of a direct kick opportunity to nail her first goal of the season -- and that was all HU needed to seal the deal.
The Falcons were kept far away from Ramras the rest of the night.
Having opened with a pair of wins on their home turf, Hamline now heads on the road for a September 6 date at UM-Morris (0-2). Game time at Cougar Field Saturday is 2:00 p.m.
