Box Score Welcome to college soccer,
Oscar Campbell. The freshman plucked a ball out of a pile in front of Augustana goalie Brett Johnson and slipped it into the net 41 seconds into overtime, lifting Hamline to a dramatic 2-1 win over Augustana (Ill.) at sundrenched Paterson Field Saturday. The Pipers improved to 3-0-1 out of the gate. It is their best start since the 2006 team won their first five games.
The Vikings, winners 1-0 at Northwestern Friday, started out like they were going to repeat history. Augustana outshot Hamline 4-0 in the first half, scoring a goal with nine minutes remaining. It was the first goal HU tender,
Derrick Mora,has allowed this season.
Things changed early in the second half when,
Gilbert Ghong, notched his third of the season, an unassisted tally at 48:36.,
HU picked up the pace from there and the game went back and forth the rest of regulation time. When the extra session started, HU sent the ball immediately into the Vikings' end. In short order, the ball ended up in front of the Augustana goal.,
Tyler Tallaksen, nudged it towards Campbell who sent it home, kicking off a jubilant celebration.
The Pipers have two more away games before starting MIAC play at St. John's Sept. 17. And we do mean away ... as in a cross-country jaunt to Washington state to face two western powers -- Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran on September 12 and 13.
